Walter Smith and Ally McCoist brought Scotland to a once familiar position – a European team, capable of beating any side in the continent. A fine 1-0 home win over France brought the Tartan Army to realize that qualifying is a real option.
Still, Smith and McCoist went to Glasgow Rangers and new manager Alex McLeish failed in his task.
This failure must have been the cause of McLeish to resign and take the managerial position in Birmingham, so now George Burley will try to take Scotland to the World Cup.
Bottom Line: Scotland surprised everyone in their last campaign and will have to do much the same if they wish to qualify.
